Ready to build on your Basic Sailing certification? ASA 102 is designed for sailors who have completed ASA 101 and are ready to sharpen their skills before moving on to coastal cruising.
Over one weekend on the water, you’ll refine your boat handling, docking, and close-quarters maneuvering aboard our J/29 keelboats on New York Harbor. You’ll build the confidence and competence to handle a boat in a wider range of conditions, setting you up for ASA 103 and beyond.
What You'll Learn
ASA 102 Basic Coastal Cruising 2 is designed for sailors who have completed ASA 101 and are ready to sharpen their skills before moving on to coastal cruising. Building on the fundamentals from ASA 101, this course focuses on boat handling, seamanship, and decision-making in a wider range of conditions.
Through hands-on instruction aboard our J/29 keelboats, you’ll gain the confidence and practical experience needed to handle a boat in more varied conditions on New York Harbor.
During this course, you will learn:
- More advanced sail trim and sail handling techniques
- Docking and departing under a variety of wind conditions
- Maneuvering under power with confidence
- Reefing sails for changing weather conditions
- Anchoring techniques and anchorage selection
- Rules of the road and right-of-way situations
- Basic coastal navigation using charts and aids to navigation
- Crew communication and teamwork under sail
