Matt has been teaching sailing at True North for 25 years and is one of our most experienced and highly valued instructors. Originally from Canada, Matt has been sailing for most of his life and brings an extensive background of sailing experience to every class.Students consistently rave about Matt's patient, gentle and friendly teaching style. He has a natural ability to make new sailors feel comfortable on the boat while helping them build confidence and develop solid sailing skills.Matt genuinely loves teaching and sharing his knowledge of sailing. His experience, patience and dedication to his students have made him an important part of True North Sailing for more than two decades.

Capt Geoff Goodwin

Geoff’s passion for sailing began the moment he first stepped aboard a sailboat. He earned his ASA 101 certification at True North in 2020, joined the club the following year, and quickly became an active sailor and Wednesday night racer. By the end of his first season, he was invited to become a skipper.Since then, Geoff has sailed around the world, earned his instructor certifications, and obtained his U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s License. Having progressed from a first-time ASA student to skipper, instructor, and licensed captain, Geoff brings a unique perspective to teaching and enjoys helping new sailors develop the same skills, confidence, and passion for sailing that started his own journey.

Capt John Kupsch

John brings more than 30 years of sailing experience to True North, beginning with windsurfing and one-design sailing and progressing to racing, cruising, and offshore adventures around the world. He holds a 50-Ton U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s License with Auxiliary Sail endorsement and teaches ASA courses ranging from Basic Keelboat and Coastal Cruising through Bareboat Cruising, Coastal Navigation, Advanced Coastal Cruising, and Docking. John is also a Boating Safety Instructor for the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau.An avid navigator and cruiser, John has sailed from New York Harbor to the Caribbean, Pacific Northwest, Hong Kong, and the North Atlantic. He brings his passion for seamanship, navigation, nature, and exploration into the classroom and aboard every boat, helping students develop the skills and confidence to pursue their own sailing adventures.

Capt Kevin Hinkle

Kevin has been sailing and instructing with True North for over 10 years. Active in the North Jersey sailing community beyond the classroom, he brings a lot of energy to every ASA class and is popular among our students. Kevin is genuinely invested in his students' success, fostering a positive, hands-on learning environment that helps sailors build real confidence on the water.
