Big Boat Sailing Workshops

Tune up your sailing and navigation skills with a six hour “Big Boat” sailing workshop.

Every workshop is limited to no more than 6 crew to maximize everyone’s helm time, sail trimming and overall hands - on experience.

All workshops are led by “Captain Nate” an American Sailing Association Certified Instructor who has decades of cruising and racing experience aboard a beautiful 42 foot Catalina sloop.

Learn how to optimize sailing performance on a 42 foot racing sloop. Optimum sail trim on all points of sail including the use of a spinnaker (conditions permitting) is covered. Proper use of the main sheet, traveler, boomvang, Cunningham and jib sheet fair leads in heavy and light winds is covered to get the most out of your sailing experience.

Practice the navigation skills required to calculate the effects of wind and current, use the radar and GPS to establish position and assess the effects of set and drift due to wind and current. Use a hand bearing compass to establish position. This includes all aspects of cruising from one location to another with the use of modern day electronics as well as paper charts and chart plotting tools. Study “Rules of the Road” as opportunities present themselves.

Enjoy the full experience of ocean sailing outside Sandy Hook and Lower New York Harbor (conditions permitting) starting with trip planning and moving on to getting underway, sailing on the ocean, and returning to port. Gain confidence in your ability to go cruising or chartering.
