Club J/29 sloops sail with a minimum of 4 members aboard, one of which must be a skipper member. Skipper members need crew and crew members need a skipper and the club puts the groups together. Every Monday the club sends out an email to all members which lists all club sailing times for the week.

Boats usually sail at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and at both 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on weekends. Simply reply to the club email with your desired sailing time. The club then organizes groups of sailors and emails out the crew list. You then just meet your fellow club members at the dock at the specified time and off you go. It's that easy. At True North Sailing Club we sail J/29 sloops which are like J/24's ON STEROIDS! J/29's are the largest and fastest boats used for Basic Sailing by ANY Club in the Tri -State area. Having that extra speed means that you can get a lot further a lot faster on all of your club cruises.

Skipper members have unlimited boat reservation privileges. Crew members may have one sailing reservation on the books at a time. Once a crew member completes their first reserved sailing session they can then make another reservation. Members can get on the water whenever they choose. Some sail multiple times per week! The more you sail, the better the value.

Absolutely! Skippers are responsible for maneuvering the boats in & out of the marina but once you are out sailing, unlike at other sailing clubs, all True North members rotate positions during every cruise. This gives crew members the opportunity to improve their driving / helming skills every time they go sailing. Be advised that not all sailing clubs work this way as some clubs have different rates for skippers and crew members so only the skippers do the driving. Also keep in mind that at True North Sailing our sailing boundaries extend from Romer Shoal Lighthouse near Sandy Hook (6.1 nautical miles south of the Verrazano Bridge) in the south to Spuyten Duyvil Creek which is north of the George Washington Bridge to the north. Most sailing clubs in New York Harbor are restricted to sailing their boats only between the Verrazano and George Washington Bridges.

Yes in fact we love to turn guests on to the joys of sailing when ever space is available but that members get first priority for available space on club boats. The guest fee is $20 cash per guest / per sail but members can only bring the same person twice per season. Guests must sign a Liability waiver which is available on our website before boarding club boats.

New members who join after the season begins buy a one year membership from the day they join until the same day the following year. After that date we prorate their dues for the remainder of the second season for example – If you join on June 1, this year (a month after the season begins) you pay for a full years dues plus the initiation fee at that time and your dues is valid until June 1, the following year. If on June 2 in the next year you then want to continue your membership for the remainder of the second season, your dues would be prorated at that time so you would only pay to sail from June 1 through the end of the season in October.
