The True North Sailing School was incorporated and first opened its doors at Newport Marina in Jersey City, N.J. in the Spring of 1991 and after 28 years when Newport Marina closed, True North then moved to Liberty Landing Marina in Liberty State Park. True North Sailing is owned and operated by Rick Van Loon, 15 time winner of the American Sailing Association’s “Sailing Instructor of The Year” Award.
The school has also been honored with the A.S.A. “Sailing School of the Year” Award 15 times since its inception and over the years has successfully turned thousands of “Sailor Wannabes” into A.S.A. Certified Sailors. True North is very proud of its 99.9 % passing rate for first time sailors taking their Certification Exam. Both beginner and Advanced Sailing Certification Courses are offered at True North Sailing.
The True North Sailing Club is the most convenient way to sail in New York Harbor. Our annual dues is the most affordable of any sailing club in the Harbor and gives you access to our fleet of J/29 Performance sloops throughout our six month sailing season. True North is conveniently located in Liberty State Park in Jersey City accessible by public transportation via the Hudson / Bergen Lightrail or the Liberty Landing Ferry from Manhattan.
Every year True North Sailing organizes exciting sailing “Flotilla Cruises” which have turned thousands of sailors on to some of the most beautiful Caribbean cruising grounds on the planet including The British Virgin Islands, The Grenadines, St. Martin / St. Barth's, Belize, Guadeloupe / Antigua, and in the Mediterranean in Croatia and in Asia in Thailand as well.
